Workshop on systemic consequences of abortion decisions in the USA and Poland

On 22 October 2020, the Polish Constitutional Tribunal declared that one of the three exceptions allowing abortion is unconstitutional. This decision almost totally banned abortion procedures for Polish women. Interpreting the 1997 Constitution, the CT left no space for the Parliament to decide on the procedures and closed the possibility of discussing the abortion issue even within the referendum.

The Supreme Court of the USA, on 24 June 2022, opened the door for state parliaments to decide on abortion procedures. The court’s decision overruled previous Roe v. Wade (1973) and Planned Parenthood v. Casey (1992) decisions that granted constitutional protection to the right to abortion in the United States of America.

These decisions of the apex courts of Poland and the USA violated women’s rights differently, though. During the meeting, prominent scholars from both jurisdictions will discuss the systemic consequences of the rulings.
