The Winter School will be delivered by outstanding experts from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Szczecin, with its prestige enhanced by the presence of distinguished guest speakers. The event is aimed at law students, practitioners, and anyone interested in deepening their knowledge of contemporary challenges in human rights.
The entire program will be conducted in English and will include both specialized lectures and interactive workshops. All sessions within the Winter School will take place via MS Teams.

“Contemporary challenges in protecting children’s rights”
Prof. Dr. Sophie Kiladze

Prof. Dr. Sophie Kiladze is a Chair of the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child. Prior to joining the UN CRC in 2021, she was elected Member of Parliament of Georgia, a Chair of Human Rights Committee as well as the Chair of the Child Rights Council. She is an author of comprehensive reforms in the field of child rights and social work in Georgia. She served as a Vice-Rector of the Police Academy. Since 2023 she is a member of the Council of Europe ECRI.
Prof. Kiladze has an extensive academic experience, including the work at Max-Planck Institute for Public International Law in Heidelberg; teaching Public International Law, Constitutional Law and Child Rights Law at different universities, publishing books and articles. She is a graduate of the Law Faculty of the University of Heidelberg (Staatsexamen), Germany, holds PhD degree and is the Professor at Grigol Robakidze University.
Renata Bem – Executive Director, UNICEF Poland

Associated with the organization UNICEF Poland for over 16 years. Advocate for children’s rights and shared responsibility of adults for the future of younger generations. Develops effective cooperation models between NGOs, local authorities and business, combining social impact with operational efficiency. dr hab. Joanna Nowakowska-Małusecka, prof. UŚ

Member of the International Law and Human Rights Research Team, researcher in the research study “Gender-Based Violence in International Law, Considering the Importance of International Criminal Law” at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia. Research areas: public international law, international humanitarian law of armed conflict, international criminal law, with specific topics: children as victims of genocide, gender-based consequences and impacts in armed conflicts, or consequences.
Member of the International Association of Genocide Scholars, the International Network of Genocide Scholars, and the International Association of Criminal Law Scholars.
dr Agnieszka Wedeł-Domaradzka, prof. UKW

Agnieszka Wedeł-Domaradzka holds a PhD in international law from Nicolaus Copernicus University and is employed at the Institute of Law and Economics at Kazimierz Wielki University. Her research focuses on human rights, particularly the rights of the child, the right to life (including the context of death), private and family life, and the rights of vulnerable groups. In addition, she is the author of more than 90 publications on human rights and international law. Currently, she is working on the concept of the best interests of the child in ECHR jurisprudence. Furthermore, she cooperates with the Open Council of Europe Academic Networks (OCEAN) CoE, and she is a member of the International Law Association and the Cemetery Research Group.
Sonia Rathore

Sonia Rathore is a PhD student in International Relations at Maria Curie-Skłodowska University (UMCS), Lublin, Poland. Her doctoral research examines food insecurity, informal welfare, and gendered vulnerability in comparative perspective, with cases from India and Southeast Europe, engaging with questions of social protection and human rights in contexts of welfare failure. She holds a Master’s degree in International Relations and was an Erasmus scholar at Charles University, Prague.
dr Mateusz Wąsik

Attorney-at-law, tax advisor, member of the Warsaw Bar Association and the Mazovian Branch of the National Chamber of Tax Advisors. He is a graduate of the University of Warsaw (2012) and completed doctoral studies at the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2021). He has 11 years of experience in tax advisory, gained in Poland, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.
In 2023, he defended his doctoral dissertation (Consequences of the Lack of Legal Recognition of Same-Sex Relationships in the Polish Legal System), earning a PhD in social sciences in the discipline of legal studies. In his practice, he specializes in providing tax advisory services related to personal income taxation (personal income tax, inheritance and donation tax, civil law transactions tax), with particular focus on cross-border income taxation. For over three years, he collaborated with Lambda Warsaw, offering pro bono legal and tax advice to the organization’s clients. He is fluent in English and Spanish. He is also the author and co-author of publications on the legal protection of LGBT individuals in Poland.

dr hab. Michał Balcerzak, prof. US

Ph.D., Associate Professor at the Faculty of Political Science and Security Studies, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, and at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Szczecin. Diploma of the International Institute of Human Rights, Strasbourg (2004). Former Member (2015-2021) and Chair (2018-2012) of the UN Working Group of Experts on People of African Descent (special procedure of the Human Rights Council). Elected Member and Vice-Chair of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination (2022-2026). Member of the International Law Association Committee on Human Rights in Times of Emergency (2017-). Enrolled in the list of ad hoc judges of the European Court of Human Rights (2018-2022). He served previously as an expert of several Council of Europe working groups. He specializes in European and international human rights law, international judiciary and the law of international organizations.

Graduate of an art history programme at the Faculty of Humanities of the John Paul II Catholic University in Lublin (KUL) and doktor habilitowany (post-doctoral degree) of law and professor of KUL and of the University of Szczecin. Co-creator of the MIGRA-TEAM research team at the Rule of Law Institute.
Coordinator of the Foreigners’ Section of the Legal Clinic at the University of Szczecin and of numerous projects dedicated to helping and integrating migrants (i.a. Support for Voluntary Returns in Lublin Region I and II co-financed from the funds of the European Return Fund). Author of monographs and publications on migration and refugee law and coordinator of NCN projects, now: “Ombudsman jako gwarant ochrony praw podstawowych migrantów” [The Ombudsman as a guarantor of protection of fundamental rights of migrants”].
dr Ewa Michałkiewicz-Kądziela

She earned her PhD in law in 2019 after defending her dissertation on “The Right to a Human Identity in Polish and International Law.” She serves as the Rector’s Representative for International Cooperation and coordinator of the Faculty’s International Cooperation Team, and serves as Vice-Dean for International Cooperation at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Szczecin.
Her primary research area is human rights and their protection in national, EU, and international law. Her research interests include issues of human identity and related rights, as well as contemporary threats to human rights resulting from social, economic, and technological changes. She teaches courses in law, administration, medical law, and uniformed services law, where she covers topics such as constitutional law, European Union law, human rights protection, states of emergency, sources of law, public interest advocates in healthcare, and more.
dr Ewa Milczarek

Agraduate of the University of Szczecin, she obtained a doctorate in social sciences in the discipline of law. Since 2016, he has been an employee of the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Szczecin, currently as an assistant professor. She specializes in international and constitutional law. Her research area includes the protection of human rights in the context of socio-economic changes. Author of many scientific publications. Active participant in international research projects, influencing the development of legal standards.
dr Magdalena Zamroczyńska

Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Szczecin. Attorney at the Greater Poland Bar Association in Poznań. Her main areas of practice include criminal law and criminal procedure, as well as medical law.

dr Anna Adamska – Gallant
Dr. Anna Adamska-Gallant – Judge at the European Court of Human Rights

Dr. Anna Adamska-Gallant holds a Ph.D. in law and serves as a judge at the European Court of Human Rights. She is a recognized expert in the fields of justice and the rule of law. For 17 years, she served as a judge in Poland and the Balkans, specializing in criminal law. From 2013 to 2018, she was an international judge within the European Union’s Rule of Law Mission in Kosovo, adjudicating, among other cases, on war crimes committed during the armed conflicts in the former Yugoslavia. In 2015, she was appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of Kosovo. Since 2018, she has worked as an independent expert on justice and the rule of law, collaborating with institutions such as Expertise France, the Council of Europe, and the World Bank. She is also actively involved in the process of establishing independent courts in Ukraine.
dr Julia Kapelańska – Pręgowska

Assistant Professor at the Department of Human Rights, Faculty of Law and Administration, Nicolaus Copernicus University, Toruń, Poland. She holds a PhD in International Law from Nicolaus Copernicus University. She is an alumna of human rights courses at Europa-Universität Viadrina, Institut des Droits de l’Homme in Strasbourg, and anti-discrimination courses at the Academy of European Law (ERA). A visiting researcher (Bohdan Winiarski Scholarship in International Law, 2017) at the Lauterpacht Centre of International Law, University of Cambridge. She currently serves as the Vice-Editor-in-Chief of the peer-reviewed journal Comparative Law Review. She is a member of the International Law Association (Polish Group) and the European Association of Health Law.
Her research focuses on various aspects of international human rights law (IHRL) and comparative law, with a particular interest in biomedical standards, anti-discrimination law, and the protection of vulnerable groups. Her PhD thesis, “Legal and bioethical aspects of genetic testing”, was awarded 1st prize in a competition for the best PhD thesis defended in Poland in 2010. Principal investigator in research grants from the Polish National Science Center (NCN) and the Foundation for Polish Science. A certified tutor of the Council of Europe (CoE) HELP Program. She is also an NCU team coach and judge in international human rights moot court competitions.
dr Zuzanna Kulińska-Kępa

Ph.D., Assistant Professor in the Department of International Air and Space Law at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw, founder of the Manfred Lachs Center for Space Law. She graduated from the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw and the French-Polish Master’s Studies in French and European Business Law at the Faculty of Law, Social Sciences, and Management of the University of Poitiers. She was a scholarship recipient of The Hague Academy of International Law (2016). Since 2017, she has been a member of the Polish delegation to the Legal Subcommittee of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space. Since 2019, she has been listed as an attorney at the Warsaw Bar Association.
For over 20 years, she has held various managerial positions at Amnesty International. She is a member of the Supervisory Board of the Space Technology Park – Research, Development, and Innovation. She specializes in space law, international human rights law, humanitarian aid, and international organizations. At the University of Warsaw, she teaches, among other subjects, sustainable development in outer space, space law, or human rights.
dr Małgorzata Myl-Chojnacka

Dr Małgorzata Myl-Chojnacka holds a PhD in Law and is an assistant professor at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Silesia in Katowice. Her research interests primarily focus on international human rights law, international criminal law, and international humanitarian law. She has conducted field research on reconciliation processes and the legal situation of victims and their families in countries such as Kosovo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Rwanda. Currently, her work focuses on the rights of Deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals.
She is a scholarship recipient of the Casimir Pulaski Foundation and a laureate of the Silesian Science Award. She graduated with honors from the Academy of Young Diplomats at the European Academy of Diplomacy. For her monograph titled Family Members as Victims of Serious Human Rights Violations: A Study in International Human Rights Law and International Criminal Law, she received the First Degree Award from the International Law Association (Polish Branch).

A graduate of the University of Surrey (MA) and the Interdisciplinary Postgraduate Studies in Translation and Interpreting at the University of Warsaw, she is an academic teacher at the English Philology Faculty of the University of Szczecin. With 15 years of experience in translation and conference interpreting, she has translated and proofread hundreds of pages of law-related scholarly papers and chapters in edited volumes for renowned publishing houses. Her professional expertise focuses on legal translation and academic language, contributing to the dissemination of legal scholarship in international contexts.
mgr Dariusz Zagrodzki

Dariusz Zagrodzki is a lecturer at the Faculty of Law and Administration at the University of Szczecin and a member of the International Affairs Team of the faculty. He is the world vice-champion of the Brown Mosten International Client Consultation Competition, an international legal advice simulation contest. His academic interests include international law, European Union law, and the international protection of human rights. He has participated in international training projects such as the Summer School on Migration and Human Rights Law, Courses on Legal English, Winter School on Human Rights, Summer Law School on Human Rights in Aarhus, and an Antidiscrimination Law Course.

ANDRZEJ JAKUBOWSKI
Andrzej Jakubowski is affiliated with the Institute of Law Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He has served as Chair of the Committee on Participation in Global Cultural Heritage Governance (2018-2022) and Rapporteur of the Committee on Safeguarding Cultural Heritage in All Stages of Armed Conflicts (since 2023), International Law Association (ILA). He is also mediator at the UNESCO Intergovernmental “Return and Restitution” Committee (ICPRCP) and arbitrator at the Court of Arbitration for Art in The Hague (CAfA). He holds a PhD in Law (European University Institute, Italy) and a Master in Art History (University of Warsaw). MACIEJ KOWALEWSKI

Professor Maciej Kowalewski, Head of the Institute of Sociology and UNESCO Chair for Social Sustainability at the University of Szczecin Chairholder. His research and teaching works are in the domains of urban sociology and protest politics. His current research project focuses on protest archives and databases.
ANNA KAWALEC
Anna Kawalec is an Associate Professor in the Department of Epistemology at the John Paul II Catholic University of Lublin. She received her MA in Polish philology, specializing in history and theory of theatre, and her MA study and PhD in philosophy (the dissertation was written at the seminar on philosophy of God and religion). She received habilitation in anthropology and cultural studies (University SWPS). Her recent bigger work is Person and Nexus: Alfred Gell’s anthropological theory of art (in Polish, 2016).
Creator and coordinator of Applied Anthropology Programme at KUL. Internships: DAMU Praha (Czech Republic), LSE (as Research Grant Award; Brunel University (UK), Manizales (Colombia). MACIEJ KRUK

I work as a specialist in the International Cooperation Unit of the Commissioner for Human Rights Office. In the Office I previously worked in the Migration and Ethnic Minorities Unit. I also specialize in legal theory and legal philosophy. After obtaining my PhD at the University of Warsaw in 2022 I teach jurisprudence and legal philosophy at the Faculty of Law Administration as well as classes in the International Legal Communication master studies at the University of Warsaw.

GABRIEL TOGGENBURG
Gabriel Toggenburg heads the agency’s Sector dealing with the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and national bodies with a human rights remit such as NHRIs or equality bodies. He joined FRA in 2009 working in the research department and became the agency’s contact point for FRA’s Scientific Committee – a function he still carries out. From 2014 to 2018, he was Senior Legal Advisor in the Director’s Office. Before becoming head of Sector, Gabriel coordinated the agency’s activities related to the EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, including the regular Fundamental Rights Report Chapter on the use of the Charter at national level and other Charter related tools and activities of FRA.
Before joining FRA, Gabriel worked for over ten years in academia. As a senior legal researcher at the European Academy in Bolzano, he provided policy advice. He has also been a visiting academic at universities in the United States and Austria. He has published over 150 academic articles in the area of human and minority rights but also communicates EU-topics to wider audiences e.g. with his blog Series “All EU-r rights”.
He holds a Master of Law (University of Innsbruck), an LLM in European law (Danube University Krems) and a PhD in law (European University Institute Florence). He is an Honorary Professor for European Union and Human Rights law at the University of Graz.
MICHAŁ ŻUK

Michał Żuk is a communications officer and speechwriter at the European Ombudsman. In his role, Michał is responsible for promoting the role of the Ombudsman and presenting its work on inquires to the general public and to experts. Previously, Michał worked for Brussels-based communications firms ICF-Next and Cronos Europa, during which he assisted the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Internal Market, Industry, Entrepreneurship and SMEs, as well as its Directorate-General for Energy, with various communications projects. He is a graduate of the London School of Economics (MSc in European Studies) and McGill University in Montréal (BA in Philosophy and Political Science).

BARTOSZ PACHOLSKI
Teaching assistant at the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Szczecin in the field of public international law. His academic interests include in particular the law of treaties, freedom to provide services within the European Union and the universal and European system of human rights protection. Additionally, he is involved in promoting Polish- German cooperation. Within the scope of his didactic activity he conducts classes in Public International Law, Protection of Human Rights and classes in English for students arriving within the Erasmus+ programme (Public International Law, Human Rights Law, International Organizations, History of Szczecin in Public International Law Perspective). From February 2020 a supporting member of the Labour Mobility Initiative that brings together the employers, scholars, workers and public administration and creates the only Polish and European forum for exchange of knowledge on the posting of workers within the freedom to provide services. Member of organising committees of national scientific conferences co- organised by the Faculty of Law and Administration of University of Szczecin. Participant of the programme “Exchange of academic teachers within the framework of cooperation between the University of Szczecin and the University of Greifswald, Germany” and a research internship together with a library search at Vilnius University

Assistant at the Faculty of Law and Administration, University of Szczecin, member of the International Affairs Team of Faculty of Law and Administration. World vice-champion of international competition on simulating legal advice with a client Brown Mosten International Client Consultation Competition. His academic interests include the international law and European Union law. He is particularly interested in the recognition of subjects of international law as states and case studies connected with international treaty obligations.
